What is AIS ?

The AIS system, that is Automatic Identification System, is a new type of electronic system with automatic ship identification, communication and navigation functions jointly promoted by The International Maritime Organization (IMO), The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), and The International Telecommunication Union-Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) in 2000.

The AIS system is composed of shore-based and satellite-based receiving facilities and ship-borne equipment. Ships installed with AIS equipment can automatically broadcast the ship's dynamic information, static information, voyage information and other relevant information to other ships and base stations, so as to grasp the surrounding sea area. The navigation conditions of ships provide a basis for planning routes and maintaining safety.
